[edit] Biography
Born Viviane "Vickie" Bowman. Vickie, the seventh of twelve children, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She began singing in church at the age of eight, and as a teenager she sang with a group known as the International Sounds of Deliverance. Later, she joined Winans Part II, a group that included then in-laws BeBe and CeCe Winans. In the late 1970's?, she married Marvin Winans, lead singer of The Winans. Together, she and Marvin had two sons (Marvin Jr., and Mario) and one daughter (Destiny) in which Vickie experienced a miscarriage and lost baby Destiny (who was accidentally cremated at the hospital after birth), Mario, a successful R&B singer, songwriter, and producer, and Marvin Winans, Jr., a member of Winans Phase II. Also in 1985, Winans released her first solo album, Be Encouraged, the LP that included her well-known song "We Shall Behold Him", as well as "First Trumpet Sound", a gospelized remake of Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Midnight Train To Georgia."
Be Encouraged earned Winans a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album, a Stellar Award for Album of the Year, and an Excellence Award for Best Female Contemporary Artist. In 1991, Winans' became the first gospel artist ever to sign to MCA Records when she released The Lady which included production by R. Kelly, husband Marvin Winans (whom later she divorced in the mid-1990's), and son Mario. On top of the success, there was emotional stress. She suffered health problems: diabetes, weight increase/decrease, and ulcerated vocal cords that required surgery.
However, it was her 1997 album, Live In Detroit, that catapulted Winans into superstardom, thanks to the mega-hit "Long As I Got King Jesus", a cover of a James Cleveland classic. This album earned Winans a Grammy nomination for Best Soul Gospel Album and two Stellar Award nominations for Best Female Vocalist and Best Video ("Long As I Got King Jesus").
In early 2000, Vickie signed with Tommy Boy Gospel intending to release Woman To Woman as the third album in a trilogy, but the label folded before the album could be released. In 2003, Winans released Bringing It All Together. This album featured the crossover hit "Shake Yourself Loose", written and produced by her son, Mario. At the close of 2003 she married Joe McLemore, a dairy owner. Her latest album, the double-disc Woman to Woman: Songs of Life, was released on August 8, 2006.[1] Today Vickie is a picture of health, and is still touring, singing Gospel Music, over 200 dates per year!
