Vicente Emparán

Vicente Emparán was a Spanish Captain General, born in Azpeitia, Guipúzcoa in 1747.
He was governor of Cumaná province in the Spanish colony of Venezuela, New Granada between 1792 and 1804.
In 1808, Spain was invaded by the French under Napoleon. Under the puppet government installed by Napoleon, Emparán accepted the position of Captaincy General of Venezuela.
Emparán arrived in Venezuela in May of 1809. During the following year he successfully avoided several coups, but on April 19, 1810 he was finally overthrown by the forces of Simón Bolívar, who established the First Republic of Venezuela. Following his ouster, he was exiled to the United States. He died in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, Spain on October 3, 1842.
