"Vicarious" is the 7-minute first single from American progressive rock band Tool's fourth full-length studio album, 10,000 Days. Debuting April 17, 2006 on commercial radio, the song entered the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart at #2.[1] It received a nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 49th annual Grammy Awards.[2]

The song also placed number 22 in the Triple J Hottest 100 2006 countdown, along with another Tool single "The Pot".

The song describes the vicarious thrill the public receives from hearing about the misfortunes of others in the media, despite their refusal to admit it.[3]

"Vicarious" has been performed by Tool at every show of the concert tour supporting 10,000 Days.

[edit] Video

A video for "Vicarious" was said to have been near completion in July of 2006, but is yet to be released.[4] A DVD single may see concurrent release, similar in format to the previously released "Schism" and "Parabola" DVDs.[citation needed]

According to drummer Danny Carey, fans can expect "more of the same" in regards to the band's distinctive music video style.[citation needed]
