[edit] Academics
The Vero Beach chapter of National Mu Alpha Theta is an honor society that participates in mathematical competitions at the state and national levels. The math team has won various individual and team awards at the state and national levels, most notably a first place Sweepstakes finish at the national convention at Chicago in 1998. The team is coached by its adult sponsors, who are also mathematics teachers at the high school. Current sponsors are Susan Hiller for Geometry and Algebra II, Brandi Williams for Pre-Calculus and Statistics, and Chris "Big Guy" Erfurt for Calculus. The most notable alumnus of the Vero Beach chapter of Mu Alpha Theta is the legendary Matthew Allan Buitron. Buitron is notorious for intimidating opponents by unveiling his custom-designed TI-3.14 calculator after he would announce his own arrival to the competition with a bullhorn. Buitron is to be inducted to the Mu Alpha Theta Hall of Fame this December (2006).
[edit] Sports
Vero Beach High School has a competitive athletics program with teams qualifying for the state tournament in their respective sports on an almost annual basis. The school currently competes in division 6A. FHSAA Hall of Fame coach William "Bill" Wilson coached Vero Beach High School to back-to-back boys track & field state championships in 1989 and 1990. The football team won the 1981 state championship, led by notable Vero Beach alumni Todd Fennell, Richard Cunningham, and Charlie Moody under the leadership of head coach Billy Livings. In 1996, player Luke Stoeckel became, at 4'11" the shortest person to ever play high school football at the 6A level in Florida. The 2003 boys baseball team progressed to the "final four" as the Class 6A Region 2 Champions. In 2005, the Men's Lacrosse team obtained a new coach, Jack McEnerney. He turned the five year old losing club/program around, used the boys' talents to their full potential, and led the boys to the number four spot in the state. Under the leadership of head coach Shannon Dean, and a record of 25-1-1 the 2006 girls lacrosse team won the Florida High School Varsity & Interscolastic Associates State Championship. Vero Beach High School has recently formed a Curling team. The girl's wrestling team just became the Florida state champions during the 2006-07 school year, also. Although multiple sports and athletic bodies are supported by both Vero Beach High School and the Indian River County School Board, many of the sports at V.B.H.S. can not be paid for by the school or board. Sports such as girl's lacrosse, boy's lacrosse, and swimming are not sanctioned by the school. Because of this, many students can't participate in these sports, for they are not able to buy the equipment to play.

[edit] Vero Beach High School Orchestra
"Vero's Best Kept Secret"
Vero Beach High School also has an orchestra conducted by Matthew V. Stott, who spends the rest of his time coaching the Junior Varsity basketball team. He is a great conductor, sure to inspire many students. The orchestra received the highest honor (straight 'superior' ratings) at the Musical Performance Assessment the past four years in a row. They have been the top orchestra in the state since the 2003-04 school year.
Along with the high school, Matt Stott also conducts the Gifford Middle School Orchestra, which was started in 2005. First chair violin is Gabi Lapointe, who also participates in Thursday afternoon practices at the high school. Her bestest friend in the whole wide world is Tyler Orcutt, principle violist. She is a talented dancer. Bridget J. is principle cellist and Cealice K. is principle second. They are a talented orchestra.
The orchestra is home to multiple talented students such as Sam Roberts (Principal of the 2nd Violin Section), Manhar Dahlal (Concertmaster), and other highly skilled senior members including Brian Durfee (violist), Melissa Evans(violinist), and Preston Horner(bassist). Junior violin soloist Emily Graves proves to be this year's most promising string player, and first in line for the 07/08 concertmaster election. Most talented cellist award (if there was one) would go to Carrie Orcutt, sister of outstanding violist, TYLER. Also, new this year, and very very talented is Lauren Lapointe, 4th chair second violin.
The legendary Mike Manganelli was even a member on the VBHS ORchestra, gracing the group with his unparalled and largely unappreciated talents. Today Mr. Manganelli goes on to share his music with small, intimate gatherings and slowly but surely work on his newest album.
The Vero Beach High School Orchestra is truly the best kept secret of Vero Beach. The individual talent and skill, as well as collective efforts and success, that comprise this orchestra can only be found under the hard work of its dedicated director, Matt Stott. His unyielding drive for the musical and moral achievement of each member sets the foundation of the group's unique formula for success.
When combined with the vaguely talented woodwind, brass, and percussion sections of the VBHS Band, the VBHS Symphony Orchestra is responsible for a great part of this success in performing arts. As if by tradition, however, these differing factions of performing arts tend to remain divided in all aspects from maturity levels to correct intonation. =D
