Verizon FiOS availability

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Verizon is currently building a fiber-optic television service, and plans to make it available to several suburban areas in the near future. However, they first must receive legal permission (in the form of a franchise agreement), and must fight the pressure that local cable companies place on state and local governments to block Verizon's television service. On September 22, 2005, Verizon began taking orders for FiOS TV in Keller, Texas and in Herndon, Virginia on November 21, 2005 [1].

This is a list of areas with Verizon FiOS availability.

[edit] New Jersey

On December 15, 2006, the Board of Public Utilities approved Verizon's application, unanimously, to allow Verizon to sell television service to all 516 municipalities in New Jersey. New Jersey governor Jon Corzine signed legislation on Friday August 4, 2006 creating a statewide franchise for Verizon to provide its IPTV services. The legislation enabled Verizon to begin offering television service in New Jersey, as of December 26, 2006. Previously any cable television franchisee was required to negotiate with each municipality for access. [3]

Comcast Cable, which has been losing subscribers to Verizon FiOS since January 2007, has advocated continual opposition for Verizon Television service in NJ. Verizon's entrance into the cable television market sparked a 2 percent tax hike for the service, increasing the tax rate to 4 percent, still lower than all neighboring states which currently tax at a 5 percent rate. [4] Verizon called tax necessary to help "Fair Play", while local cable providers urged subscribers to write their congressmen to oppose the tax. The increase would mean paying $3 instead of $1.50 on a monthly cable bill of $75.00. Supporters of Verizon's FiOS network argue the long-term savings that customers will enjoy simply by allowing a competitor into the local cable market would far outweigh the small increase in the tax rate.

Currently, Verizon's service is not availible in certain areas of New Jersey (listed below) that use underground facilities.
