[edit] Contributions to Friends Articles

Keep up the good work. I'm pleased to see your contributions to Friends articles. Logophile 10:04, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Phoenicians and Cornwall

I'll have a look at that, though once one starts with Cornwall articles one could go on forever, as they're not wonderful.

By the way, I don't agree with your removal of my first square bracket. The convention is standard (Brackets [sometimes called square brackets] are used to enclose editorial interpolations, corrections, explanations, translations, or comments in quoted material: Chicago Manual of Style). Halliday doesn't start the quote till "are very fond of strangers…"; presumably the naming of Belerion appears earlier in Diodorus's account, which is why I used the square brackets.

I haven't got the Payton book, and so I don't know if someone has come up with undisputed Phoenician evidence since Halliday wrote his book (I live at Tintagel and haven't heard of such finds round here). I don't rule out that Phoenicians came here, along with the various other Mediterranean seafarers we know about; after all, Iberians are known to have colonised Cornwall and Ireland, and Cornish tomb-building styles can easily be traced back to the Mediterranean. But speculation is no good for a Wikipedia article; assertions have to be those made in reliable sources. As for saffron cakes, sheesh!

Anyway, good call. qp10qp 14:54, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ine and Egbert

I've put up a draft paragraph at Talk: Cornwall, if you'd like to have a gander. qp10qp 22:55, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fox family of Falmouth

Was fascinated to come across them - had vaguely heard of them before, but hadn't known much about them. DuncanHill 15:15, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the info about Brighton Libraries, will definitely look them up :) DuncanHill 00:52, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Davies Gilbert

I think he encouraged Humphry Davy, and had something to do with Gideon Mantell (the palaeontologist) also - don't have any ref's to hand tho'. DuncanHill 15:06, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I have tried to answer your questions on the Davies-Gilbert Family.

[edit] Gweek

In that it is more easily reached from Helston than Falmouth, then I would say yes. Why? LessHeard vanU 00:18, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it matters too much whether Gweek is described as southwest, south or southeast, Kerrier - since the majority of readers will only have a vague idea where Cornwall is within the British Isles. Rather than placing it within an area, why not indicated how far (and in what general direction) from the major population areas - Falmouth and Helston - it is? For most people the Seal Sanctuary would be the most important aspect, not its location.LessHeard vanU 00:37, 4 November 2006 (UTC) g'night!

[edit] Helpme

{{helpme}}

someone deleted my userpage and started editing in my sandbox. I have now changed my password.

=== Vernon White (talk) 23:21, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello, you used the {{helpme}} tag. How may I help you? When you've asked your question, please put the tag back so we know to check back. Alternatively, you can join the Wikipedia Bootcamp IRC channel to get real-time help. (Use the web-based client to get instant access.)— Deon555talkdesk 23:23, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Deon

{{helpme}} Someone deleted my userpage and started editing in my sandbox. I have now changed my password. Can you find out how they did it and stop them doing it again, please? === Vernon White (talk) 23:27, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Vernon39. I have reverted the changes and fixed it. No need to be alarmed, this is a wiki. Every page can be edited by anyone :) Just for the tape though, [1] shows you actually removed all the text yourself — Deon555talkdesk 23:30, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

{{helpme}}Yeah but the text was of an article Robert R. Reid whilst I was writing an article on Edwin Octavius Tregelles. === Vernon White (talk) 23:35, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Hm.. Not sure about that.. and even the blanking doesn't show up who did it, it just _did_, and you were the only person to edit it either side.. Some things can't be explained :)Deon555talkdesk 23:38, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
No Worries! Let me know if you need anything else, by dropping by, or if I'm not around, use {{helpme}} Peace out! — Deon555talkdesk 08:37, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Josiah Fox

Hi, just discovered Josiah Fox - he seems to have been a Quaker from Cornwall, so thought you might be interested! DuncanHill 14:56, 17 December 2006 (UTC) I have added a further note to the Talk page. To bed now! === Vernon White (talk) 00:30, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Charles Masson Fox

And another! DuncanHill 20:11, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

I am more interested in the 19th C Foxes, especially those descended from Robert Were Fox the Elder . I don't think any more infor than his parentage is needed for the C.M. Fox article. === Vernon White (talk) 00:29, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your message

Thanks very much for that. It is messages such as yours that make this such a nice place. Very best wishes, --Guinnog 21:21, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Change to Common.css

Per recent discussions, the way in which Persondata is viewed by Wikipedia editors has changed. In order to continue viewing Persondata in Wikipedia articles, please edit your user CSS file to display table.persondata rather than table.metadata. More specific instructions can be found on the Persondata page. --ShakingSpirittalk on behalf of Kaldari 02:14, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fry Family

Thanks for adding Joan Mary Fry. I should probably work on her sister Margery who ceased to be a Quaker but was heavily involved in prison reform (and whose biography is on my bookshelf).--Erp 05:06, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Holford/Fuel

I thought that the Fuel link would enable WP users to see the other sorts of business this Battersea firm engaged in. It hasn't much of a Google presence so far! However, I bow to your advice. === Vernon White (talk) 17:02, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Actually, since removing the reference, I've been batting the whole issue around in my mind. I'm newly tempted to readd it, since they indeed aren't the only Fuel PR firm out there. Perhaps if the reference stated "There are multiple public relations firms name [Fuel]; his firm is located in Battersea." -- Zanimum 17:38, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
No. I think you were right first time. Best Vernon White (talk) 22:13, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Quaker Council for European Affairs

I have removed the notability tag, but it would be nice if you could use some reliable, third party, published, non-trivial sources, as is explained here so as to prove that the group is definately notable. J Milburn 21:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Right, if we are going to get picky- their website says that they did that. Let's take the metaphorical Joe Bloggs. He is recognised by the English government as an English citizen, and, due to the three protests he has attented, is (according to his blog site) 'instrumental' in banning fox hunting, preventing the local school being closed, and banning a logging firm from cutting down the local woods. Also, he was a 'majot player' in getting Labout into power. (Well, he voted for them, and persuaded his wife to do the same...) Now do you see why the policy is needed? You are, of course, welcome to debate said policy, but, until the policy is overruled, it is probably best to stick to it. Now, if the group is half as notable as the website makes out, it would be stupendously easy to find a couple of sources. If they were this instrumental in the various things they claim to be, surely the broadsheets of most of Europe will have featured stories on them at some point? Also, they will be pasted all over the web. Or, is the organisation just a group of Quakers who thought they would turn up at a couple of protests? (Two notes- first of all, I have full respect for the Quaker movement, it was formed locally to me, and I know a few Quakers, all of whom I have found to be wonderful people. Secondly, I have no doubt the group is notable, I am just playing the Devil's advocate and using extreme examples, in an attempt to improve the article, and the encyclopedia as a whole.) Message me if I can be of any help! J Milburn 21:33, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, I appreciate that it is the kind of information that is not readily available, but it would help the article a lot if you could source some of it. Looking at a few Google results, there DOES seem to be a lot of external coverage there, including (as you have mentioned) articles from the various EU websites. It would be good if you could throw a few of them in, just to try and prevent the article being biased, and proove that this isn't just a church action group. I would say that there was enough information on the Internet to make this a pretty good article. On another note, I have visited Swarthmoor Hall. As you no doubt gathered from my userpage, I only live a few miles away, and an interest in local history (as well as a philosophy club I attended, run in a Quaker church, coincidentially) drew me there twice. J Milburn 22:19, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I've told QCEA about a small typo on their site and asked them to look at the WP Qcea article. I hope other members of the Quaker WikiProject will contribute. BTW have you any views on the British replacement of the Trident system article === Vernon White (talk) 22:38, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, if you haven't already, I would reccomend posting at the Quaker Wikiproject, and actively looking for help, rather than just hoping someone will. Looking at the article you asked me about, it looks pretty good. It reads well, and (something I hold very highly) it is well sourced. If you were asking me about the issue, rather than the article, then I am undecided. The major employer in my area is BAE Systems, which makes the subs, and so if the replacement was not made, a lot of jobs in my area would be lost. I think that there CAN (very rarely) be a case for war, but NEVER nuclear war, yet I see the need for a deterrent. I think I am leaning slightly towards it being the wrong thing to do. Why do you ask? J Milburn 23:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah, I see what you mean. I will keep my eyes on the local papers, see if there are any opinions on the matter there. J Milburn 10:44, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Quaker template

Thanks for adding the Quaker template onto Kenneth E. Boulding. In the future feel free to add the assessment tags for tracking on the Quakerism articles by quality page. So far I'm about the only one to do so, and it seems like the priority rankings there might be better served if there were more opinions shared. --Ahc 05:03, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I will try and get into this. Shall read Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment.=== Vernon White (talk) 11:22, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of [unassessed articles] tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 23:21, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Understandable if the system is confusing to you. Thank you for responding! --Ozgod 00:38, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unauthorised change of password

{{helpme}}

Someone has twice changed my WP password. Yesterday I received a chain email threatening bad luck if I didn't forward it to my friends. === Vernon White (talk) 18:45, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

They're not changing your password; they're asking for a new password to be emailed to you (both it and your old password will work), presumably to annoy you. (There's a cap on such requests, so they should be cut down to a tolerable rate.) As for the chain letter, if people are using Wikipedia email inappropriately you may as well just ignore them (you might want to report that sort of thing at AN/I if it gets really bad). Hope that helps! --ais523 18:48, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Charles Hastings (canadian Public Health physician)

An editor has nominated Charles Hastings (canadian Public Health physician), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Charles Hastings (canadian Public Health physician) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it.
