Vermont is a U.S. state located in New England. The state ranks 43rd in land area (9250 square miles), and its population (608,827) ranks as the second-smallest of the fifty states. As the only New England state with no coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, Vermont is notable for the Green Mountains in the west and Lake Champlain in the northwest. It borders Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, New York to the west, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. Famous for its scenery, dairy products and maple syrup, Vermont has long been known for its liberal politics and staunchly independent political thinking. The state capital is Montpelier, while the largest city is Burlington.
Originally inhabited by Native American tribes (Iroquois, Algonquian and Abenaki), the territory that is now Vermont was claimed by France but became a British possession after France's defeat in the French and Indian War. For many years, rightful control of the area was disputed by the surrounding colonies. Settlers who held land titles granted by the Province of New Hampshire, through their Green Mountain Boys militia, eventually prevailed. Vermont became the 14th state to join the United States, following a 14-year period during and after the Revolutionary War as the independent Republic of Vermont.

Montpelier is the capital of the U.S. state of Vermont and the county seat of Washington County. Known for its lively downtown driven by the activity of state government, Montpelier is the site of the Vermont State House, visible from the outskirts of town, is located on State Street on the west side of downtown. The Winooski River flows along the south edge of downtown and is fed by several smaller tributaries that cut through residential districts.
Along with Barre, the city forms a small metropolitan area in the center of the state. As of the 2000 Census, it was the least-populous state capital, with a population of 8035. It is famously the only state capital without a McDonald's franchise, and home to the last remaining clothespin manufacturer in the United States. Granite quarries are a major part of the city's economic activity; timber was once a large industry in the region in the 19th century but has largely declined. The city is also home to the New England Culinary Institute.
Mount Mansfield is the highest mountain in Vermont. Originally named "Mountain-With-A-Head-Like-A-Moose" by the Abnaki, the mountain was renamed Mansfield after the now-dissolved town of Mansfield, Vermont, which was named in honor of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. The peak elevation, in the town of Underhill is 4395 feet (1339 m) above sea level. The mountain has the appearance of a human face when viewed from the east, with a distinct forehead, nose, lips, chin (the highest point), and an Adam's apple. Along with Camel's Hump immediately to the south, Mount Mansfield is one of the two spots in Vermont where true Arctic tundra survives from the Wisconsin glaciation, the most recent ice age.
