Venus of Brassempouy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Venus of Brassempouy, also known as the Brassempouy Lady is a miniature bust of a female, approximately 22,000 years old, carved from ivory. It was found at Grotte du Pape, near Brassempouy, Landes in France. Despite being a bust, it is generally classified as a Venus figurine.
This bust, only approximately 1½ inches (3.5 cm) high, is notable for being one of the earliest known examples of accurate facial features found in prehistoric art, a period during which artists generally depicted humans, especially those of the Venus figures, with blank faces or very minimal representation.
