From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

VENUS is an acronym for the Victoria Experimental Network Under the Sea. The VENUS project is a cabled seafloor observatory. [edit] Overview

The Victoria Experimental Network Under the Sea (VENUS) is an advanced cabled sea florr observatory. It consists of fibre optic cables that provide power and communications to and from sea-floor instrument systems. These systems include a wide variety of oceanographic instruments for studying the ocean. Researchers and the public can log onto the VENUS web site (http://www.venus.uvic.ca/) and browse data, image, and audio galleries. Registered users (free) can request and download data and data products. The VENUS observatory is managed by the <a href=""http://www.uvic.ca/">University of Victoria</a> on behalf of Canadian and International ocean scientists.

[edit] Infrastructure

The backbone of the observatory is the fibre optic cable, connecting the sub-sea instruments to the Internet. This cable connects the sub-sea instrument systems to a dedicated shore-station, where network and observatory controls are located. Data are retrieved in real time back the the Data Management and Archive System (DMAS) at the University of Victoria, where they are stored and processed for display over the Internet.
