[edit] History

From WoWWiki:

Twenty-five thousand years ago, the world of Argus was shaped into a paradise by the eredar race who called it home. But one day, the peace of the eredar was shattered. Sargeras, Destroyer of Worlds, had noticed the achievements of the eredar. Instead of destroying Argus, Sargeras offered to transform the eredar into an unstoppable race of warlocks, his perfect spellcasters. Two-thirds of the eredar, led by Archimonde and Kil'jaeden took the offer. Only one eredar leader realized the true horror of Sargeras's Burning Crusade: Velen.

Velen, unlike Archimonde and Kil'jaeden, had the gift of Sight, and was granted a vision of the dire ramifications of the Burning Crusade. Horrified, Velen desperately prayed for guidance- a prayer that was answered when one of the Naaru descended. The Naaru, one of a race of beings dedicated to stopping Sargeras, aided Velen and his supporters in fleeing Argus.

Needless to say, Kil'jaeden was not pleased.

The Legion chased the exiles, or "draenei" ("Exiled Ones") as they had come to be known, across the universe for thousands of years. Each time Kil'jaeden approached, the Naaru granted new powers to Velen to preserve his race. After millenia of flight, Velen and his people were finally able to evade the Legion settled on a world they named Draenor. During his time on Draenor Velen met and spoke with a young Durotan and Ogrimm.

Kil'jaeden soon learned of Velen's presence in Draenor, and sent one of his agents to observe the planet. Taking great interest in the Orcs who resided in the area, he decided to corrupt the Orcs in order to carry out his bidding. After Kil'jaeden started to slowly corrupt the Orcs through their chief shaman, Ner'zhul. The orcs soon grew stronger and more vicious, while learning new technology and new venues of magic, namely demonology.

Despite several raids against Draenei hunting parties by several orc clans, being a peaceful leader, Velen tried to negotiate with then-chief shaman of the Orcs, Ner'zhul. Although he and his guardians were captured by Durotan, Durotan released Velen after stripping him of one of his Ata'mal crystal. After the blood of Mannoroth the Destructor fully corrupted the Orcs (most notably the Warsong and Blackrock clan), the Orcs began siege of Shatt'rah, the Draenei capital city located in Terrokhar forest. Although most of his brethern were slaughtered that day, Velen and a couple of his closest advisors were able to escape the fury of the corrupted Orc horde by taking refugee at Zangamarsh.

Thousands of years later, Velen survived the genocide of the draenei by fel orcs, the latest in a succession of Kil'jaeden's pawns. When the Broken cleric Nobundo returned to the draenei, having been converted to shamanism by the Spirit of the Wind, Velen was the only draenei who would listen to him. Velen realized the purity of the Elemental Spirits, and sanctioned Nobundo to begin teaching other draenei the ways of the shaman.

Recently Velen lead a band of draenei to hijack one of the satellite structures of Tempest Keep, the Exodar, from Prince Kael'Thas and used it to escape Outland. In seeking out other worlds, Velen and the draenei hoped to find allies who would stand with them against the Burning Legion and its Crusade. [1] While escaping, the draenei had made a few miscalculations and crashed on an island in Azeroth in the Azuremyst island chain.
