Velammal Engineering College

Velammal Engineering College (VEC), is a premier engineering college located in Puzhal near Chennai, India. Established in 1995 , this College is managed by Velammal Education Trust, which was founded in 1986. .

VEC is an institution which has been approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, and is affiliated to Anna University, South India. The College is an ISO 9002 certified institution as of June 2002.

The college boasts decent infrastructure and an unstable teaching community which focusses on teaching on stick and carrot approach. Life at VEC can be quite a way as regular cycle test and unit tests are regular in here. The students who clear these tests are left off while those who flunk are bound to attend special classes that aim to make them clear these tests.

The college attained a decent placement record of 85% in this current academic year and is regularly conducting placement training program to achieve good placement records.

The college is notorious among the student community for its authoritarian methods. A wide range of prohibitions prohibit everything from mobile phones to goatees. The administration believes that the students dedication to his/her academics suffers as a result of the various "distractions" like phones,fashion, and freedom.

One way VEC ensures this dedication to academics, is through the "disciplinary committee" or "spies" as the students call them. The spies , in an act of gross invasion of privacy, keep a constant watch on the students in class, the canteen, and even the buses on rare occasions. Their primary objective being the maintenance of "Velammal Culture" within the college campus.This "Velammal Culture", an oxymoron in itself, is nothing but a sanctimonious propaganda that is as empty as the College's student council.

• The Department of Computer Science has been in the forefront of establishment of the TIFAC-CORE on pervasive computing technologies at a cost of Rs.5.14 crores in the college. One Asst. Professor and 2 Lecturers have been deputed from the department to work in the CORE.
• The department has received a funding grant of Rs. 2.01 Lakhs from Tamil Virtual University for a project titled "Language Localization for Tamil in Mobile Phones".
• A project titled "Predictive texting in mobile phones" with a funding grant of Rs. 2.15 Lakhs is under consideration in Tamil Virtual University.
• The Department is in collaboration in the computational studies aspect in a project prepared by Chemistry Department which is under consideration by Indian Council for Medical Research.
• A staff student team of the Department has won the second prize in the State level Project competition conducted under the auspices of kanithamizh sangam.
