Veblen is a city in Marshall County, South Dakota, USA. The population was 281 at the 2000 census.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 281 people, 141 households, and 73 families residing in the city. The population density was 350.0/km² (915.8/mi²). There were 167 housing units at an average density of 208.0/km² (544.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.49% White, 15.30% Native American, 2.49% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.85% of the population.
There were 141 households out of which 22.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.5% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.2% were non-families. 47.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 29.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.99 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 18.5% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 30.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $18,583, and the median income for a family was $20,625. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,053. About 25.3% of families and 29.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.9% of those under the age of eighteen and 23.2% of those sixty five or over.
