VDMSound

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

VDMSound is a legacy PC sound card emulator for Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and XP, written by Vlad Romascanu.

It emulates Adlib and Sound Blaster cards (standard, pro and 16), parallel port DAC, and an MPU 401 midi interface.

It is used mainly in order to get sound and music in old DOS games played on new incompatible hardware.

As opposed to DOSBox, which emulates an entire x86 personal computer with DOS, VDMSound emulates only portions of the DOS environment and the sound hardware. This results in reduced system load and thus the games run faster than under DosBox on the same hardware specifications, but at the same time VDMSound does not provide the same level of compatibility as DOSBox.

The project has been abandoned by its creator, and the sound emulation code from VDMSound has been integrated into DOSBox[1].
