Vassilios Papageorgopoulos

Vasileios Papageorgopoulos (born 27 June 1947 in Thessaloniki, Greece) is a Greek politician and retired sprinter who won two medals at the European Indoor Championships as well as the bronze medal in 100 metres at the 1971 European Championships in Athletics. He first got involved in politics in 1978 when he was elected City councilor of Thessaloniki. He practised dentistry until 1981, when he was elected as a member of the Greek Parliament, representing Thessaloniki, for the Conservative party of New Democracy (Greece). Papageorgopoulos has been, since 1 January 1999, the Mayor of Thessaloniki.
