Vartiokylä
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vartiokylä (Swedish: Botby) is one of the 54 neighbourhoods (Finnish kaupunginosa; Swedish stadsdel) of the city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The name comes from the ruins of a 11th century fortress on the Linnanvuori heights in Vartioharju. It is a mainly residential area mainly with own houses, some apartment blocks and minor small industry workshops. In the 1930s, after the construction of the road to Porvoo, the working population of Helsinki started building houses and moving in. In 1946, Vartiokylä became a part of Helsinki.
Vartiokylä has been assigned the neighbourhood number 54. Each neighbourhood is identified by a two-digit number between 01 and 54 and an official name in both Finnish and Swedish (in some cases they may be identical).
The Porvoo Road or Itäväylä and Ring I cross at Vartiokylä and are the major arteries for vehicular traffic. The shopping centre Itäkeskus (Östra centrum in Swedish - both names mean "eastern centre" in English) is a district (as of the 1980s) in the eastern part of the city Helsinki. The disctrict's main attraction is the largest covered-in shopping mall in the Nordic countries — Itäkeskus shopping centre. The disctrict has two stations on the Helsinki Metro, Itäkeskus metro station and Puotila metro station.
