[edit] Varsity View, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Varsity View is one of the original neighborhoods of Saskatoon. Development started along the riverbank and in the Nutana neighborhood in 1884, homesteading began across the South Saskatchewan River with the advent of ferry service, Residences spread to Varsity View, especially with the addition of the University of Saskatchewan on April 3, 1907. Englishman Richard Bottomley built the first Varsity View home c1912 during Saskatoon's Hub City years. The investment in community came to fruition later as neighboring roads were settled in the 1920's and 1950's.[2]

Within the Core Neighbourhoods Suburban Development Area, the Varsity View neighborhood comprises the Grosvenor Park Neighborhood near the University of Saskatchewan. It is bounded by College Drive to the North, Eighth Street East to the South, Clarence Avenue to the West and Cumberland Avenue to the East.

Most homes were constructed between 1940 to 1970, and the area has a high influx of young residents due to the proximity to the University of Saskatchewan

  • Brusnkill School / Kinsmen Children's Centre [3] Brunskill School was named after William 'Cy' Brunskill a member of the Saskatoon School Board. Kinsmen Children's Centre was added on in 1986 and renovated in 1999. [4]
  • Albert School One of Saskatoon's early Castle style public elementary schools built 1912.

  • Albert Public Elementary School now Community Centre located at 1001-11 Street East constructed 1912. This collegiate gothic style school was designed by Scottish Architect David Webster and has now become a Municipal Heritage Property[6][7]


  • Original Board of Trade Building 1022 Temperance Street was originally constructed down town but was moved across the South Saskatchewan River to this location in 1920. [8]
