Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) is engaged in the design and manufacture of advanced equipment and software solutions for treating cancer with radiation, as well as x-ray tubes for original equipment manufacturers, replacement x-ray tubes and flat-panel digital subsystems for imaging in medical, scientific and industrial applications. The company has 3600 employees and produces and markets products for treating cancer with radiation, including linear accelerators, treatment simulation and verification products, information management and treatment planning software. Varian produces a very popular line of radiation therapy linear accelerators called the Clinac series; several variations of the Clinac treatment delivery system are installed in facilities all around the world.
Varian was founded in 1948 as Varian Associates. In 1999, it spun off its other businesses to concentrate on medical systems, and renamed itself to Varian Medical Systems.
