A few months later, in February of 2004, is released the anime serie, basing in this game. For more info, see Variable Geo (anime).
[edit] Anime
- Main article: Variable Geo (anime)
The general aesthetics of the game, with character designs and stereotyped personalities, is basing in anime series, having all the designs resembling this style. Also have elements of another Japanese subcultures like Cosplay and Otaku.
Also, the music of the series (mainly from the openings of the series) resembles anime music, mainly used J-Pop. The most known songs from the series are Endless Life, singed by Masami Okui (Advanced V.G. 2 Opening) and We Survive, singed by KOTOKO (V.G. NEO Opening).
Because all of those elements, 2 anime series (a 3-chapter OVA and a hentai series) have been adapted from the game. The KSS Studio made a OVA based in this game between 1996 and 1997, and ADV Films releases the VHS in 1998 and the DVD in 2003.
[edit] Controversy
This game series since the beginning has been oriented for male audiences, specifically for adult audiences. Almost all the games contain explicit adult content, with CGs where the females defeated by the players have their clothes ripped off, and then raped. Especially in Rebirth games, where the characters have dates that ends in sexual relations. This game is characterized for using sex as a selling point, even more than Dead or Alive series or titles like Rumble Roses.
Some of the console versions (like SNES or PlayStation ports) omitted those CGs, only using the portraits of the defeated characters, with their clothes ripped.
[edit] Trivia
- The designer and creator of the game series, Takehiro Kimura, also is the man behind another famous fighting series: Asuka120% Burning Fest.
- Many of the restaurants where V.G. fighters come from, are parodies of existing Japanese restaurant chains, like Yuka's Hanna Miller's.
- The main character, Yuka Takeuchi has a personality resembling Ryu from Street Fighter series, even having the same background story, and similar goals. Also, her rivalry with Satomi Yajima is similar to Ryu and Ken Masters from the same game series.
- Jun Kubota is one of the first female wrestler in fighting games, along with Angela Belti from Power Instinct series.
- Ayako Yuuki is the first lesbian character to appear in a video game.
