JAMA this weeks contains three trials all demonstrating effectivity against placebo and even bupropion.
- 352/329/344 varenicline/bupropion/placebo - 12 week course - better than bupropion and placebo at 12 weeks but equally good as bupropion at 52 weeks - 28.1% nausea
- varenicline+weekly counselling vs bupropion or placebo - better than both at 52 weeks - nausea - dropout rate about 10% for all modalities
- varenicline vs placebo with extension for those who were abstinent for >7 days - difference very small
An editorial raises some concerns about inclusion bias and generalisibility of the results[1]. I've hesitated to cite the first three studies without taking a closer look at these writers' objections. JFW | T@lk 22:27, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
This drug I believe is now available in the UK on prescription. This I feel should be added to the article.
