Vannimais were Tamil kingdoms that existed in the north and east of Sri Lanka before colonial period. There were Vannimai Kingdoms in Vanni, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Vannimai Kingdoms were free of Northern Jaffna Kingdom and southern Kingdoms. Because these kingdoms lasted for a significant period of time, they are called Adangappattu in Tamil. People of Vannimais were called Vanniars, while Vannimais were called Vanninadu.

[edit] Arrival of Vanniars

Vanniars came from the South Indian cities of Madurai, Thirisipuram, and Thangai. They represented almost all castes and it is mentioned that they were very poor when they came to Vanni. After immigration they converted the jungles into agricultural lands. Soon they became very wealthy people.Vanniars were ruled by the regional Vanni leaders. The Vannimai Kingdoms existed between Northern Elephant-Pass and Southern Pavanikkulam, and from Western Mannar to Eastern Trincomalee.
