Vanceboro is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 898 at the 2000 census.

Vanceboro is located at 35°18′14″N, 77°9′8″W (35.303883, -77.152346)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 898 people, 385 households, and 262 families residing in the town. The population density was 201.6/km² (521.2/mi²). There were 434 housing units at an average density of 97.4/km² (251.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 73.16% White, 24.16% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.56% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.89% of the population.

There were 385 households out of which 38.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% were married couples living together, 21.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 71.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 62.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,655, and the median income for a family was $41,458. Males had a median income of $29,306 versus $22,308 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,327. About 16.5% of families and 18.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.8% of those under age 18 and 23.0% of those age 65 or over.
