Origin of the name.

  • The word Dutch word "van" is fully equivalent to the English word "of" and the German "von". Hence it is not usually capitalized in names.
  • Buren is a city/estate in the Netherlands, and nobles were commonly named after their possessions.
  • Literally translated, the Dutch word "Buren" means "neighbours". However the etymology following the name of the city ruled by the Egmond family is more logical.

Royalty named "van Buren"

  • The name (van) "Buren" appears also in the Dutch royal house, being the name of the first wife of William I of Orange. This use of the name predates the founding of the American Colonies.
  • Queen Beatrix is Countess of Buren.
  • Also, the royals have been known to use the name Van Buren in situations requiring anonymity
