Welcome to Wikipedia!
Hello Vanderdecken/Archive 1, welcome to Wikipedia!
Here are some tips:
- Read the Tutorial, How to edit a page and the Manual of Style.
- Create a User page.
- Sign your posts on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~).
- Read the Policies and guidelines.
- Add yourself to the New user log.
- Ask questions at the Village pump or Help desk.
- Be bold!
- Use the Show preview button
- Provide an Edit summary.
If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.
If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, Alphax τεχ 10:41, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
Thankyou for the advice
Thanks, Alphax. I've actually been here for a few months, lurking and sucking as much information as possible into my brain, but I only just added my name to the users list. Thanks. —Vanderdecken∴∫ξφ 3 July 2005 14:45 (UTC)
Hello from AlMac
- I am also new to this place.
- I was born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1944, and now live and work in Evansville Indiana.
- We share some common interests.
- I enjoy some PC games, mainly empire building like Civilization and Railroad Tycoon.
- I am a book-a-holic, big time.
- I first started reading science fiction books when I was 9 years old.
- People who visit my home, who are not big readers, sometimes ask in amazement if I read all of them. Oh yes I say, some favorites even 20 30 times.
- The last time I moved, after I managed to get rid of a lot by donating to nursing homes, veterans hospitals, church groups and so forth, I had about 25,000 paper backs to move, about 1,000 magazines, about 1,000 hard backs. The collection has got to be at least double that now.
- My living room has been taken over by fllor to ceiing book shelves that run the length of the room, with a pathway around, and more book shelves along the outer walls, and my bedroom is almost as bad, from perspective of books everywhere.

Reading for the Future
I also help out a little with Reading for The Future. I suggest that if you are also interested in Science Fiction, and after you have shown your parents what I am saying, to see what they think about this, that you might also like to subscribe to the Internet discussion group Reading for the Future.
This is a group, primarily made up of School Teachers and Librarians, who seek Science Fiction material that would be appropriate to use in the classroom. I am NOT that ... I am a computer programmer in a type of computers other than PCs ... but I think this is a worthy objective that perhaps I can help with.
There are some very famous Science Fiction writers who participate in the discussion.
Typical discussion, since I joined the group, has been
- what people thought of recent TV Movie on Science Fiction Themes
- looking for particular themes in Science Fiction that is non-controversial (suitable for most any audiences) such as that which
- shows pros & cons of space elevators but is realistic with respect to what we can do right now or in near future
- depicts people who have handicaps who are able to have a full productive life
- depicts challenges of underdog in our society, like women, minorities, artificial intelligence

Voting syle
Hi!
I'm glad you like my voting style! You should check out the massive argument that erupted after I tried to make a voting template. You can either use my templates (see my userpage under the "my voting" style and just copy and paste each of those templates as appropriate.
Alternatively you can make your own sub userpage (just copy off the code from support, oppose, neutral) and make the page into a template like what I've done.
Good luck! --Fir0002 11:38, September 10, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Fir. Much appreciated. —Vanderdecken∴∫ξφ 10:22, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Your edits
You really felt it necessary to add you sig to a comment in my archive? Wow... that's dedication. See ya around. --LV (Dark Mark) 14:33, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Not sure if that was meant to make me feel bad or good. If bad, then sorry, if good, then thanks. I just remebered making that edit and realised I'd never signed it. —Vanderdecken∴∫ξφ 15:08, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
- No, no, no. I didn't mean it to come off as condescending. I just noticed you added your sig and thought it fairly odd. Seeing as that edit was so long ago, it was just surprising to see someone add a signature. No harm intended. See ya around. --LV (Dark Mark) 15:17, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

- Okay, thanks. No hard feelings. Seeya! —Vanderdecken∴∫ξφ 15:27, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Pic of the day
Hi
Since you nominated Image:Casing.jpg on WP:FPC I thought you might like to know that it will be up for Picture of the Day tomorrow. If you get a chance, you can check the associated caption for accuracy at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/November 26, 2005. -- Solipsist 08:40, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your efforts
Hi, although the nomination of my picture Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Ladder to heaven failed, I would like to sincerely thank you for your efforts to improve it.--SylwiaS 09:50, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your nice words. I'm glad that you enjoyed "How to deal with Poles". I've read the introduction on your page, and I must say that although I don't know BBC radio at all, I love the BBC TV series. "Blackadder" is one of my favourite, esp. the Regency one. I also like "Office", I used to work in a similar company and they are so right about it and extremely funny.--SylwiaS 14:21, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

XBOX 360 pictures.
Can you provide sources for these two? Image:X360 Console-Controller.png and Image:X360 Logo.png It's just that they are rather large, filesize wise, and closer examination suggests they've been converted to png from jpeg, leading to inefficient optimisation. If you can point me to original images, I'll see what I can do.--Drat (Talk) 14:19, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Main Page redesign
- Hi, I noticed that you said on the redesign talk page, "Just stick the Italian header on the top of Draft A and I'll be happy." There's now a Draft H, where I used my minimal html skills to do basically exactly that. :) What do you think? :) Zafiroblue05 23:39, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
User page contest
Hi,
I'm counting on you as for the Userbox. This will celeriter the process of spreading the word. Thanks for your useful contributions. Wikipedia:Votes_for_best_User_page Federico Pistono ✆ ✍ 22:11, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
Regarding the Best User Page Project
Let us try an experiment. Until further notice, the voting system will be open, using the method described in the Guidelines. This will make us understand how reliable the current system is and whether the project has a real possiblity to expand into hundrends of users or not.
All users are encounaged to display the {{BestUserPage}} banner on their User Page.
All members all encoraged to display the {{BUP}} banner in their User Page, and also notify that project has started.
We will refer to the votes for this first session as "March 2006" in the archive.
Federico Pistono ✆ ✍ 19:31, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
vote images
Would you please consider not using images in your votes? It's an unnecessary addition, makes it seem to others that you consider your vote more important than others, and wrongly encourages others to do the same. It is an unnecessary use of resources - images in particular cause headaches for the server admins who keep the site going.
Also, if you are going to use personal support and oppose templates, please use substitute them every time, as in {{subst:User:Vanderdecken/Oppose}}. Thanks. -- Netoholic @ 08:06, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- Pleae note that I have had to revert Netoholic's removal of your images before you had a chance to respond as he did not have policy to back him up nor did he have good cause or permission to remove content from your subpage. JtkieferT | C | @ ---- 08:26, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, you two. I didn't know about substituting before now, but it instantly seems like a good idea. Although Netoholic had no right to go editing my own personal subpages, and he should have asked me to do it myself, I agree with his motives. —Vanderdecken∴∫ξφ 12:38, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Your snail FPC edit
I notice you uploaded an edited version of the snail FPC, Image:Grapevine Snail.jpg. As this version wasn't promoted, it currently isn't being used in any articles. Would you like me to delete it as a redundant image, or would you prefer to keep it uploaded? Raven4x4x 08:57, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Image overwrite
I don't mean to rub you out, but I overwrote one of your images (Bliss.png). My version isn't all that different - just a smaller resolution and start menu with items in it. If you feel like you're being replaced or something, feel free to revert it! — Jeremy | Talk 08:54, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism
Just checked the iced coffee page... are you talking about my accidental wiki linking to my source instead of sourcing it with a source link? And are you seriously calling me a vandal for my work?!? That is real big big of you, I’m not making an attack at you but it is really the behavior of a jerk. You put my name as a vandal on the edit explanation screen? That is just brilliant, you’re a real piece of work, you know that? JayKeaton 13:00, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Underscore removal
This happened a long time ago but I noticed an IP edit in my Watch page so I always double check them for vandalism (The edit was not vandalism) and I noticed the user had a talk page so I took a look and was going to leave a compliment when I saw your message to him back in May
I fail to see how replacing "_" with " " can be seen as vandalism. Typically we discourage white space edits when not accompanied by other edits.
WP:AWB is an editing tool for wikipidia that, along with the intended edits, tags along edits to the page's code that are not visible when viewing the page but rather make the page simpler.
If there is a specific reason you wants to keep a "_" on your page make sure to include a <!-- comment --> so that other editors don't keep changing it back.
While that user's particular edits may not have been that helpful, i can not see who it could be hurtful. Why did you say some people view it a vandalism. I am aware of how such edits clutter up the history and watch list, but it's not that serious of a thing. That user's removal of the warning was inappropriate but It seems like you way Overreacted to the event.
Just an advise against IP Profiling. Remember to alleyways assume good faith. My biggest problem with edits like that is when a new user gets added to AWB and starts to run though every page and Make white space edits. While Somebody doing this with a semi-bot it something that needs to be stopped I don't see the problem with Users changing it by hand if they happen to see it while editing.--E-Bod 06:22, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Re: Editing my userpage... confused
My apologies, my editing summary should have been like this: "Bypass userbox redirect from template to user namespace. See WP:GUS." Like this one. When I tried to save edits by using "Ctrl + s" in AWB I accidentally changed the editing summary instead in a few of my edits.
As for the changing signature, I just checked the "Unicodfying whole article" checkbox in AWB (such option exist because Wikipedia uses unicode), it was a side effect of my edits. I wasn't targeting your signature when I do my edits. --Hunter 19:21, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
90 days -> 180 days
Thanks for the idea of making the barrier more than 90 days in [3]. For the moment, it seems like the whole thing is going down the drain. Nobody cares. Shame, really. Some activity on it would be nice... renaming the whole thing to [...] after 180 days [..] and changing it accordingly, well, I just don't know. I have this feeling that it wouldn't help. I guess the topic will be picked up in 1-2 years, when almost all usernames will already be used. Like in the old times in hotmail. We will see... THX for the comment anyways! Msoos 18:40, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- THX for putting it up for voting, it seems a lot of people are on your side, i.e. more time is needed, like 1 year would probaby suffice, plus some extra stuff devoted to doppelinger accounts. Dunno if any of these would help, though. Most of the 'big' admins didn't bother to vote, or voice their opinions. I do hope, however, that the issue is now more visible than before and something is going to happen with it, if not this exact proposal than something else. Thx again, Msoos 15:42, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Copied from User talk:Bastin8
To start off being perfectly frank, after reading your userpage and the comments here, I admire you enormously. I think you're amazingly intelligent, witty, and have the right ideas about how Wikipedia and the world should be run. That's why I'm here, partly to boost your narcissistic ego, and partly to ask if I might be able to nick a couple of your funnier userboxes. Reason: They're VERY witty, and I believe they have the right idea. Especially the American English, teetotal, grammar Nazi, Python, Carnivore, and evolution ones. I'm not asking to use all of them; just, say, five; with a few modifications. Please? I'm also going to (whether you like it or not) add you to my newly created (in about five minutes in fact) list of Wikipedians I admire. This really isn't going to help that Narcissism, is it? —Vanderdecken∴∫ξφ 18:21, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the compliment; I am indeed amazingly intelligent, witty, and have the right ideas about most things. As a reward for feeding my ego, you can copy whatever you want. You can even praise my majesty even more by considering me to be a Wikipedian that you admire, if you're so inclined. Bastin 18:28, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
(Potential) dyslexia and Wikipedia
Hi, with regard to this edit: as far as I'm aware, there is no Wikipedia policy excluding dyslexic editors, or those who just can't spell; furthermore, there's no requirement for people to edit in their native language (in fact, I think it would be just great if non-English Wikipedias would limit themselves to translating en:, rather than creating huge stores of knowledge inaccessible to anyone who doesn't read Manx ...).
So, in summary, while I believe ruber chiken (talk • contribs) has much to learn (who doesn't?), I don't think you should discourage him from editing.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:X360 BonusRemote.png)
|
Thanks for uploading Image:X360 BonusRemote.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 06:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Featured Picture Fixing
Hey, you asked me a while ago (i haven't checked my messages) to send you a higher resolution photo of this picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/muzaffarabad_hotel) so that it could possibly be made higher quality. How shall I do that? Admiralakbar 15:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
You know, I believe the reason why it's smaller is because I had to resize it for the Muzaffarabad page. It was far too large to fit. Is there a way I can submit it as a larger picture, but keep it smaller on the Muzzafarabad page? Admiralakbar 18:26, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Awesome. Thanks a lot. Very helpful. I actually have some more pictures from Kashmir, so I might start adding them to more pages. I'll get to work on getting that picture back on the featured pictures page. I can't do it at work though! Admiralakbar 14:52, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Just wondering what your recent comment on Talk:The_Goon_Show was for, is this some personal dig at JB82 or just random Goonism on your part?
