[edit] The Wrong Fuel?

I feel there are valid arguments against claudia being used as a fuel. Note that these are based on the English subtitles and dubbed speech, and may be different in the original Japanese.

- In Episode 5 "Positional Play", Claus drains a liquid he refers to as fuel from a Guild craft in order to fuel the ship. The liquid is light brown in color, as opposed to the luminescent blue appearance of claudia. It is referred to as being high quality by Lavie, resulting in improved vanship performance. At no time is this material referred to as claudia.

- In Episode 13 "Isolated Pawn", Claus is able to start the engine of his vanship despite lacking claudia. With only the bare minimum of claudia to lift the vanship above the ground, he travels a considerable distance.

These incidents and others throughout the series support a different theory of claudia use: In a vanship, the ship uses a liquid fuel (derived from either petroleum or plants) to fire a steam engine which contains claudia in water solution. Under conditions of high pressure, the claudia generates an anti-gravity field. Crew on the Silvana/Silverna caution Claus to beware of the fields around the ship's claudia unit, but this does not appear to be a problem for the smaller systems used on vanships. The effect of claudia appears to function by repulsion, as it is capable of propelling a spacecraft such as Exile. Claudia units used for capital ships operate by an unknown, possibly different, mechanism. OmegaPaladin 03:50, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Seems reasonable to me. But I think claudia is more analogous to oil, since it doesn't seem to be the primary powering source but nevertheless seems to run out (supply of claudia seems to be one of the Guild's main leverage) eventually. --Gwern (contribs) 04:22 12 March 2007 (GMT)
