vanniar and vanniyar can be merged together as both terms are used interchangeably. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.6.139.11 (talkcontribs) 17:07, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

The content of the two was nearly identical, so I redirected vanniar to this article. Picaroon9288 17:19, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

vanniar puranam, which means the story of vanniar, gives the history of the vanniars.

Thiru K. Rathinam Naicker reprinted this book with detailed explanation in 2005. Book Author and Publisher: Mr. K.Rathinam Naicker, Velan Publishers, No. 137/64, Ayya Mudali St, Chintadripet, Chennai-600002. TamilNadu. India.

also Chilai Ezhubathu - was written by Kambar in praise of and about Vanniyars.

Inscriptions and records tells us about the Vanniyar king rule starting from 1305 Ad(Salivahana era 1227).From 1305 a dynasty called Mazhavarayars started ruling Ariyalur. They were Padayatchis of royal origin. Starting from 1305 many Mazhavarayar kings(Vanniyars) ruled Ariyalur.

There is also an old saying

       "Palli muthina padayatchi
        Padayatchi muthina Vidayatchi"

Palli-An ancient fighting tribe who were skilled hunters.Because of their skills Pallis were recruited in armies. With their talents they rose to commanders of army and also leaders of army groups and so they were called as Padayatchi.

Padayatchi -Padai +aatchi. Padayatchi refers to warrior or soldier.

What we mean by Aatchi? Aatchi -administration,leadership.

So Padayatchi also means one who rules or administers the soldiers. There are several inscriptions and records(all are valid) which proves this.

So now we know about the padayatchi. Now look at the last word in that saying. "Vidayatchi".

What is Vidayatchi? Vidayatchi = Vidai +aatchi. Vidai means Bull. Aatchi as usual refers to administration. The term means a rule or rajyam with a bull flag.

This saying means that when Palli joins the army he become a soldier(Padayatchi) and when Padayatchi becomes powerful they will become rulers with bull flag. Some Vanniyar rulers who rose to power used bull flag.

We all know the flags of Chera,Chola and Pandiya Chera- Bow flag, Chola- Tiger flag, Pandiya - Fish flag.

Pallavas had bull flag. Some get confused with flag and Seal or sign(lachinai).some think Pallavas had lion flag.No they had bull flag only.Only for seals or sign they used lion image.Vanniya rulers also used bull flag and it is a small example of the relationship with Pallavas.

Again bull sign refers to saivam or followers of Shiva.vanniya rulers are also mentioned as Sambukula or sambu. The best example is Sambuvarayar kings. They are said to be saivites and followers of sambu.
