Vampire Elder

Vampire Elders are a specially powerful breed of Vampires in the Underworld mythos.

The first immortal, Alexander Corvinus, passed on his immortality strain to two of his three sons, Marcus and William. Marcus was bitten by a bat, and he inherited the characteristics of a bat. Marcus became the first Vampire, and thus the first Vampire Elder.
Marcus turned the aging Hungarian Warlord Viktor and the lady Amelia into the next two Vampire Elders. In return for his immortality, Viktor was to provide his army for the use of Marcus. Although Marcus was the first Elder, Viktor quickly grew into the position of greatest influence due to his command of the small Vampire army.

Viktor sought to completely undermine Marcus, but Viktor was told that should Marcus or William die, the rest of their respective bloodlines would die with them. This proved to be a strong enough deterrent that not only did Viktor never kill Marcus, he never killed the first Lycan William either.
The Vampire Elders had an intricate system known as the 'Chain', during which one Elder ruled while the other two slumbered in the crypt in Ordoghaz, for two centuries. This system was devised to prevent more than one powerful Vampire being in power at a time. Generally, only one elder will awaken another; Elders can, during the awakening process, organize their thoughts into a cohesive record for the next Elder to refer to; however, it is possible for any blood to provoke an awakening.

Vampire Elders cannot be differentiated from other Vampires by sight. However, they are capable of much greater physical feats; Elders possess greater speed, strength, and endurance. An Elder can engage a powerful Lycan in its animal form and overcome it with relative ease.
The Vampire Elder Viktor was able to combat the hybrid Michael Corvin. The two were almost evenly matched, despite Michael's inherently more powerful nature. Viktor was the much older and more experienced of the two.
