Valley Stream South High School (VSSHS) is a public junior and senior high school in the town of Valley Stream, New York in southwest Nassau County. The school was established in 1955.[1]
The high school is one of three high schools in the Valley Stream Central High School District. The school is one of two junior-senior high schools in the same district, and is attended by seventh through twelfth graders. The district also contains one middle school and a high school.[2] Students who attend "South" (as it is called locally), are mainly graduates of the local South Valley Stream elementary schools, including William L. Buck Elementary School, Brooklyn Avenue Elementary School, Forest Road Elementary School and Robert W. Carbonaro Elementary School which is approximately 100 feet to the high school complex.
Valley Stream North High School was designed around the same time as Valley Stream South High School. Both schools are similar in design and both are archrivals when it comes to sports. The school is composed of three floors and is in the shape of a square with a courtyard in the center.
Approximately 1,350 students attend VSSHS. The school's official colors are red and white, and the school's mascot is Falco the Falcon. According to statistics published a few years ago, VSSHS is the top school that spends more on its students than any other high school in the nation.
The school is head by Dr. Stephen Lando (Principal), Lori Tintella (Assistant Principal), and Gregory Peddle (Assistant Principal - Guidance).

[edit] The Falcon Report
The Falcon Report is a 7-10 minute student-made weekly TV news report shown school-wide on Fridays at 9:18 during homeroom period. All activity at South comes to a stop as all -- students, teachers, administrators, secretaries, custodians and visitors -- watch the show together. Full-footage news coverage of 4-7 different stories in the news that week, a Character Action award winner, a student-made commercial, a weather report, and a sports segment are usually shown. Frequent topics covered include school events, trips, innovative projects in classes, and unusual events at the school. Taping of the show is typically on the Thursday after the school day, and lasts late into the evening. The logo is the symbol of Valley Stream South High School, a red falcon. The program is administered by one teacher, but the rest is done by the students and for the students. Many Falcon Report alumni are studying communications or related fields in college. The Falcon Report has been going on since November 22, 2002, and is headed by Ross Lipsky, a present math teacher at South High School.
