[edit] Somalia change
Hi Valentino! I was going to revert your change to the Somalia article, but then I saw that you have seemingly made many very good contributions to other country articles, so I though I'd ask you first. Do you have some reference documenting that Somalia is not "Somali Democratic Republic" anymore? I did a Google search, and it seems to me that it is still formally called by that name. --Dittaeva 12:00, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Hi Dittaeva, thanks for your comments! Before I edited the Somalia article, I went to check on the name in the CIA World Factbook (which I believe is where most of Wikipedia's country profiles come from). In the Somalia government section, the name currently used for the country appears as Somalia, whereas the name Somali Democratic Republic was only used before the country became fractioned off and no official government was in place. It's possible that only the United States government recognizes Somalia as simply Somalia, while the rest of the world sees it as the SDR. It's a sticky subject, but I will check further and report back. --Valentino 01:51, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I don't think I would call it sticky. It's not like those kind of names always tell "the truth" about a country. Did you take the other name changes from the factbook too? That would be kind of strange because I think most country articles are based on the factbook anyway, hm... Anyway, I'd like to see some note on why / how the change was made, if it has been made, but then again, the factbook should be accurate. Are you implying that the US didn't want to call i "democratic" because they don't consider it so? In that case I would certainly stick with democratic. --Dittaeva 14:39, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- After searching through a ton of websites, I was not able to find a definite answer on the official name of Somalia. Most of the sites I visited seemed to concentrate on the secessions of Somaliland and Puntland, the national chaos, and the "no official legitimate government" policy in effect. So I searched through my hard copies, and in the Dorling Kindersley World Reference Atlas I have, Somalia's official name is listed as "Somali Democratic Republic". But this book is from 1994 - so I don't think it is that accurate nowadays. Then, I checked the Britannica 2004 World Almanac (who get their most of their info from the Britannica Encyclopedia), and Somalia's official name is listed as Soomaaliya (in the Somali language), and as As-Sumal (in Arabic). So for the moment, I am guessing that Somalia is the official name of Somalia, and the SDR denotation stopped sometime during the last decade before the war broke out. I did mention that the US might not recognize Somalia as democratic, and that is because the US has no official embassy or diplomatic representation to and from Somalia, but I think I was wrong on that, unless there are websites that say otherwise. If you have found something else, please reply back; for the time being, we could temporarily put the names I put in bold on the Somalia Wiki entry. --Valentino 04:53, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)
- Real nice that you look this up! When I have searched for SDR on Google it lokks like SDR has been used by amond other the UN and Amnesty up until at least 2000, but electionworld claims that it changed its name to Republic of Somalia just before desintegrating. I suppose documents on the new transitinal government should say something on what they call themselves. I think maybe all the different names belong in some histry section and not in the intro.--Dittaeva 13:25, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image:HuJintaoPortrait.jpg
Hi Valentino,
What is the website address of the site where you got Image:HuJintaoPortrait.jpg?. It's a nice portrait, and I wonder if the website from which you got it has any other portraits of CPC leaders. -spencer195 20:01, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Hi Spencer,
- I got the Hu Jintao portrait from the website of the CCP-owned newspaper China Daily. I have searched this website and other websites high and low to see if I could find any other good portraits of Jiang Zemin or Deng Xiaoping in the traditional uniform of the Central Military Commission (the green suit), but I can't still find a hi-res portrait of either. It would be great if you could try and search the rest of the site for these types of pictures. Thanks! --Valentino 04:31, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)
-
- Thanks for the info. I've found some decent headshots of Jiang Zemin in a business suit (See [1]), but no larger versions or headshots of him in a Mao suit. I'll keep searching. -spencer195 05:05, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
-
-
- Actually, Jiang's Wikipedia entry has a picture of him in the Mao suit, but a face portrait of the same would be better for the entry. I did find a picture of Jiang in a traditional Chinese suit along with George W. Bush, but I don't think it's close enough. I hope you find it; I'll keep looking also. --Valentino 06:47, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Deng Xiaoping
Dear Valentino, You have uploaded the portrait of Deng Xiaoping (long ago, I know ;-). Now, we have taken it into the German wikipedia where I have expanded the Deng Xiaoping article to featured article standard. Now, we are very critical about copyrights in the German Wikipedia, so I would like to know whether you remember where you found the image, to check whether it's really in the public domain. It would be cool if you could answer me on my German talk page, which is here. Thanks in advance, -- 219.137.231.124 09:13, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:LiXiannianGala.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:LiXiannianGala.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Until a more informative tag is provided, it will be listed as {{no source}} or {{no license}}. Could you add a better tag to let us know its source and/or copyright status? If you made the image yourself, an easy way to deal with this is add {{GFDL}} if you're willing to release it under the GFDL. Alternatively, you could release all rights to it by adding {{NoRightsReserved}}. This would allow anyone to do whatever they wish with your image, without exceptions. However, if it isn't your own image, you need to specify what free license it was distributed under. You can find a list of the tags here. If it was not distributed under a free license, but you claim fair use, add {{fairuse}} but you need to substantiate your claim by explaining why you think it's fair use. If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images by posting to my talk page. If you do this, I can tag them for you. Thanks. RedWolf 04:31, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:ValentinoBabel.PNG
Thanks for uploading Image:ValentinoBabel.PNG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Dethomas 05:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sumter County FL Seal
Hi, I am webmaster for the official Sumter County BOCC website (http://sumtercountyfl.gov). I noticed you put our old logo and website address on Wikipedia. I was able to edit the page to change bocc.co.sumter.fl.us to sumtercountyfl.gov, but I do not know how to modify the seal. This page: http://sumtercountyfl.gov/logos.htm has several file formats of the new seal adopted in 2004. Could you please update it, or provide instructions for me to do so?
Thank you, Cindy Williams Webmaster, Sumter County BOCC Information Tech

[edit] WP:Peru, May Collaboration, and Lima Article
First off a Wikithanks for adding the new template to the Lima article, it looks really good. Second, welcome to Wikiproject Peru, it is always great to have new members join our ranks. Third, I see you voted for the collaboration and I just closed it with a tie of 3 for Peruvian Army and 3 for Andres de Santa Cruz, because alot of interest was expressed in the former from viewing the votes Peruvian Army was given the May collaboration and Andres de Santa Cruz was given next month.--Jersey Devil 16:20, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Untagged image
An image you uploaded, Image:Chipley.png, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 11:08, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
