There is a saying that this place got its name due to Azhagamman Temple,a Hindu Saivate temple situated in the Noth-East corner of the Vadiveeswaram Circle. Vadivu means beauty and eswara(god) and together forms the beautiful God's place. Vadiveeswaram was also the birthplace to famous composer Neelakanta Sivan.

In Thiruneelakanta Botham, he praised Vadiveeswaram as Vadivodu mannumidam Vadiveeswaram and Maathinodu mannudan Vadiveeswarame.

Among the famous streets in Vadiveeswaram are Palla Theru(Deep Street), Big Street(Periya Theru), Dalavai Street, Mettu Theru (Up Street), East Car Street(kizhakku radha veedhi), West Car Street(Merku Radha Veedhi) and so on.
