[edit] Merger
I have merged Vachana and Vachanas to create this new article. However, the earlier articles had contradicting POVs on interpretation of Vachana sahity with reference to caste system. Since both the articles did not have cite any sources to prove the POV, I have not included them in the merged article. Here is the info present in the earlier articles on caste system and vachanas:
Vachana:
Among other reasons, the popularity of the vachanas is based on its colonial/20th century reading as a literature expressing a subaltern revolt against Hindu caste-system. As scholars are increasingly of the opinion in the recent times, such readings are based on the colonial interpretations of the Indian tradition and there is a need to revive it urgently.
Vachanas:
According to the 20th century scholars, it was closely linked to the social revolution lead by Basaveshvara, Allama Prabhu and Akka Mahadevi. This interpretation has been the dominant one in the modern studies in Vīraśaivism which dates back to the early 1920s.The pre-20th century scholars do not look at the vachanas as articulating an anti-caste position. -- Naveen (talk) 16:29, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
