V.I.P. Records

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

V.I.P. Records was a daughter record label of Motown Records. It was active from 1964 until 1972.

One artist to release singles on this label was the white soul singer Chris Clark who sang songs such as 'Do Right Baby Do Right', which are still popular amongst fans of 'Northern Soul'-

Starting VIP was part of the strategy of soul kingpin Berry Gordy Jr., who created several new labels - Soul, VIP and Rare Earth - to augment his Motown/Tamla combine, presenting DJs with an array of labels for his growing stable of artists and thus increasing the odds of having these new labels played on the radio.

Among artists on VIP were the Spinners, who hit with "I'll Always Love You" and the Elgins, who had two remarkable soul hits, "Darling Baby" and "Heaven Must Have Sent You" in 1966 and 1967.
