V-Ray

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

V-Ray is a third-party plugin from Chaos Group for 3D computer graphics packages such as Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya, and is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

It is widely used as a rendering engine in substitution of the standard and mental ray renderers included in the 3Ds Max 8 package, and can be used with earlier versions of the same software that predate Autodesk's acquisition of the mental ray engine. It is also newly available for the Autodesk Viz software.

It has been used in the development of films, games and other 3D design projects which use either 3ds Max, Maya or Viz.

Although it has rendering functionalities, that is not all what this plug-in offers. It also offers Global illumination uses, which includes a technology that calculates how the light reflects off of different objects onto another shape to brighten it in addition to the directed light provided by the light source itself. There is a whole range of other uses also.
