V-Army
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The V-Army are one of two major fan clubs of the Columbus Crew. They are known to chant throughout the game, and bang drums, like many other MLS fan clubs. They sit in section 137 (The Northend) at Crew Stadium.
In 2000, a group of individuals with the same passion for the Columbus Crew decided to separate themselves from the rest of (The Northend). There were no specific reasons given, just that they wanted to get involved with other aspects of the atmosphere. Thus, V-Army was formed. They decided to move up to the middle of section 137 so that their noise could be heard more. Although there was now more than one group in the section, their objective was the same – to get the North End to be as loud as it could be.
V-Army’s name came from the 1941 speech given to the Allied forces by Winston Churchill. Churchill stated that if we all had different agendas, the war would be lost, so together the Allied forces became one Victory Army.
“You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terrors. Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.” – Winston Churchill
V-Army also separated from the old North Ends’ tailgate. V-Army moved to underneath the trees for more shade during the heat of summer. It is also in the grass lot, so more soccer could be played.
In 2006, leading members of V-Army reached a consensus to re-emphasize Section 137 as a whole so that partisanship for the Crew was put ahead of partisanship of different supporters' groups.
