Talk:Vârcolac

NOTE: I added a redirect page varcolac to link to this one since most people will forget the accented a (â.)--Ryuukuro 06:10, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
At first I was inclined to take this article at face value, because vârcolac does obviously come from the Slavic root for werewolf, and it seemed unlikely that someone making up Romanian mythology would go to the trouble to do that kind of research. But now that we have established that vârcolac is the regular Romanian word as well, that argument is less cogent. Especially because this discovery undercuts the original author's claim that the vârcolac is not like the Slavic wereworlf. It would be nice to find some sources on this: I am loath to just erase it. I'd rather assume good faith. --Iustinus 19:15, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Reference
The DEX confirms the Fenris-like figure, which is one version of the vârcolac in Romanian folklore. Other versions are in the manner of the Strigoi, Pricolici, werewolf, etc. About its identity to the Slavic versions or not, well, this needs to be further verified. Though folklore figures in common between Vlachs and neighboring Slavic peoples are rarely completely identical (as an example, see the Greek adaptation, the vrykolakas).
