Utah State Route 71 starts out on SR-186 (400 South) in Salt Lake City, heads southbound as 700 East until 4500 South (SR-266), where it dips southeasterly and turns southbound onto 900 East. It continues as 900 East until once again, it heads southwest to make 700 East again. It then goes south, all the way until Draper, where it turns west on 12300 South. It then heads west until after passing 700 West. Then it dips southwest for the last time and forms 12600 South. It then continues until Riverton, where it ends on Redwood Road (SR-68). SR-71 passes through Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, Millcreek, Murray, Midvale, Sandy, Draper, and Riverton. Main freeway intersections include Interstate 80 (on 700 East in South Salt Lake) and Interstate 15 (on 12300 South in Draper).
