State Route 201 is a freeway/expressway located in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It begins at the intersection of 2100 South Street and State Street (US-89) in Salt Lake City and continues westward along 2100 South Street to 300 West Street as a four lane city street. There is then a break in the route and it begins again at the southern interchange of Interstate 15 and Interstate 80, and heads westward along the border of West Valley City and Salt Lake City as a freeway. At approximately 5600 West Street the freeway dips southwest into Magna and is downgraded to an expressway. It continues west through the northern reaches of Magna and enters barren territory. It passes by refineries and the Kennecott Smokestack, the tallest structure in Utah, then curves around the northern end of the Oquirrh Mountains. It ends at Interstate 80 near the border with Tooele County.
The freeway portion of U-201, known locally as the "21st South Freeway" or simply "201", provides an alternative to I-80 when needed and also is very important for the residents of the westside and Tooele County that work in Salt Lake City. Current plans call for the freeway to be extended all the way through Magna due to increased traffic counts, especially from rapidly-growing Tooele County, while the rest of the freeway will be expanded to six lanes. So far the state has expanded the freeway to 5600 West Street, and the remainder of the expansion will occur as soon as funding permits.
While State Route 201 is a freeway until 5600 West Street, many road atlases show otherwise. For example, the Rand McNally Road Atlas '06 shows State Route 201 as a "limited-access freeway" until the western portion of Interstate 215. Past that, State Route 201 is a "multilane highway" until the western end of it, on Interstate 80.
