USS Flagg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The USS Flagg is a fictional sea vessel from the toyline and cartoon series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. It is the G.I. Joe Team's aircraft carrier. It is named after the team's slain commander, General Flagg. As a toy, it is the largest G.I. Joe playset ever, measuring about seven and a half feet. The hull classification symbol of this ship is CV-99, which as of 2006 has not been assigned to any real aircraft carrier. The hull is designed after the SCB-125 (angled-deck version) Essex class aircraft carrier.

In both the toy and comic book series, the USS Flagg's commander is Admiral Keel-Haul. However, the commander in the cartoon series is Admiral Ledger. The reason for the discrepancy may be that Hasbro is rushing to have the toys introduced so soon in the cartoon series, the show's writers may not have been aware of the characters attached to the vehicles released that year of 1985 and a character was needed that would command the aircraft carrier. Most of the characters that came with the vehicles were not introduced in that season.

When the Flagg was initially released, it was through Toys "R" Us only for a retail price of US$99.99. It is now traded among serious collectors for anywhere from a few hundred dollars for sets in poor condition with missing pieces (individual pieces/parts are vigorusly traded/bought as well) to over a thousand dollars for a product still in its original, unopened box.

The USS Flagg holds the honor of being the largest playset ever built but is not designed to be ridden nor climbed upon.[citation needed]
