From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The USS Clinton APA-144 was a Haskell-class attack transport, one of hundreds of "victory ships" built as part of the US World War II production effort. The ship was launched on November 29, 1944 and commissioned February 1, 1945. The Clinton left San Francisco on April 17, 1945 and delivered replacement troops and equipment onto Okinawa before spending the rest of the war transporting casualties, additional troops and equipment, and prisoners between various points in the Pacific.
The ship was decommissioned May 2, 1946 and designated for disposal on October 1, 1958 at which point it was stricken from the naval registry. The ship was re-designated "amphibious transport" LPA-144 on January 1, 1969, then finally used as a target ship and sunk on August 1, 1984.
