Many people mistakenly assume that because NASA is part of the United States Federal Government, that all images from NASA fall under the public domain. This is untrue for many images, most notably those from the Jet Propulsion Lab.

All images found on the JPL web site should be have this in their notes section, to remind others to caption:

{{JPL Image Copyright}}

Which is displayed as:

This image is copyrighted by the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The JPL allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that the copyright notice Courtesy NASA/JPL-Caltech is displayed.

[edit] Image Caption

When a JPL image is displayed, the copyright message should appear under it, using the following text as an example:

[[image:MER_art_(large).jpg|thumb|200px|Artist's illustration of the [[MER]] - {{JPL Image}}]]
