hey i'm gald someone figure out where to put team usa information, i had set up a roster if anyone wants to use it for anything Team USA. should the roster on this page be seperated by postion ? Jackalsclaw 19:59, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Relationship with MLB

For virtually any non-American, the fact that a sport has two governing bodies (one for the big teams, one for everyone else) seems bizarre. In England, for example, the national game is basically run by the The Football Association, although the FA Premier League (perhaps the closest equivalent to MLB) has a degree of commercial independence. This article really needs to explain how the split in administration actually works, who runs what, who represents who internationally (my impression is that USA Baseball sits on the International Baseball Federation but only represents amateur baseball, and there is no international representation for professional baseball - is this true?). What about minor league baseball? Who runs that, and what does USA Baseball have to do with it? And how did this split occur? (I'm assuming there actually was a split...in England, there was a recognisable split in "soccer" when the top teams broke away from the "establishment" in 1991, basically for financial reasons.) This article states that USA Baseball was only founded in 1978 - was amateur baseball not collectively organised before this point, or was USA Baseball a successor organisation? Why did people feel the need to create it if was new? If, under a previous incarnation, it predated the MLB, how did a separate MLB come about? Is there any reason why USA Baseball's work isn't handled by a branch of the MLB? These things are quite perplexing to someone not used to the way US sport works. I think the fact that they aren't covered detracts from the article significantly!TheGrappler 03:02, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

now that USA Baseball is involved with the WBC, it can no longer be accurately said that USA Baseball represents only amateur baseball. USA Baseball has nothing to do with the minors other than the fact that it will from time to time recruit minor-league players for exhibition/olypmic games. no one really "runs" minor league baseball...a more accurate term would be "minor leagues baseball" because the minors are essentially a collection of leagues at six discrete levels (AAA, AA, A, extended spring training, short-season A, and Rookie). i'll try to conjure up an analogy to english football...imagine Arsenal signs a player to its youth team. the gunners own the rights to him, no? well, in american baseball it's the same thing except that there are six development teams and they all play in different leagues in different parts of the country. BTW there is no team relegation or promotion in any American professional sports league. for your other questions try the history of baseball article. i'm guessing there wasn't much of a demand for overseas exhibition games prior to 1978, and baseball wasn't an olympic sport, thus there was no need for an american baseball federation. lastly, personally, as a sports-patriot and baseball fan, i wouldn't want MLB to be too involved with USA Baseball. MLB is made up of greedy owners who have no interest in their investments playing in an international tournament. it's not yet like soccer/football where every national federation agrees that winning the world cup is the highest goal. i hope i helped.
