The Upajjhatthana Sutta (Subjects for Contemplation) is a Pali sutra which lists the five remembrances, five facts upon which all people are advised to reflect often, whether lay or monastic, male or female. As the 57th sutra of the 5th book of the Anguttara Nikaya, it is abbreviated AN 5.57 or AN V.57.

The five subjects for contemplation (as translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu) are:

  1. I am subject to aging, have not gone beyond aging.
  2. I am subject to illness, have not gone beyond illness.
  3. I am subject to death, have not gone beyond death.
  4. I will grow different, separate from all that is dear and appealing to me.
  5. I am the owner of my actions, heir to my actions, born of my actions, related through my actions, and have my actions as my arbitrator.
