Unterseeboot 42 (U-42) was a German Type IX U-boat of the Kriegsmarine.
Her keel was laid down December 21, 1937, by AG Weser of Bremen. She was commissioned July 15, 1939 with Kapitänleutnant Rolf Dau in command.
U-41 conducted one training patrols and one war time patrol, both part of the 6. Unterseebootsflottille.

U-42 left the port of Wilhelmshaven on October 2, 1939. During this patrol, one ship was damaged, the British steam freighter SS Stonepool, sailing as part of the convoy OB-17 from Liverpool to North America.

On October 13, 1939, U-42 was sunk by depth charges from HMS Imogen and HMS Ilex south-west of Ireland. Of the 46 man crew, 26 were killed in the depth charging, with 20 surviving.
