MedSoc is the Medical Students' Society of UNSW Medicine. It was founded to represent the views of the 1500+ medical students of UNSW. Celebrating over 40 years of service, it represents, supports and protects the academic, social and political interests of each student and in some cases, alumni. This is done through the various strong links with various organizations, the faculty and each medical student.
UNSW MedSoc was one of the founding members of AMSA, the Australian Medical Students' Association in 1961. In recent years, UNSW MedSoc is the forefront of Australian Medical Schools in looking outward to the ever shrinking globe to reach out for new partner universities. These partnerships are to share political and educational view in the light of globalization. In 2006, a landmark milestone in MedSoc history was the building of an alliance with the University of Wales, Swansea. Both Medical Societies of University of Wales and University of New South Wales are working diligently through this process of bonding, and further links as to student exchanges and curriculum workshops are hoped to be seen in the near future. In 2007, a goal of UNSW MedSoc is to further extend its sphere of influence into Europe with a link with the University of Oslo, Norway. UNSW MedSoc is also looking to extend further it's international diplomacy into Asia. With the upcoming Medical Science curriculum opening up in UNSW Asia, UNSW MedSoc hopes to charter a link with our younger brethren in Singapore. As well, UNSW MedSoc's focus is to the future of medical politics in NSW with the addition of new medical schools within the coming years. It hopes to establish with University of Newcastle, Australia and UNSW MedSoc's long-standing rival, University of Sydney, a NSW Medical Student's Association. It will eventually include all 8 current and upcoming medical schools in New South Wales.
MedSoc has membership from all years of UNSW's 6 year medical degree. MedSoc is also one of the few medical societies that automatically enroll its students as members free of charge. MedSoc has a member base from diverse backgrounds ranging from rural students, urban students, aboriginal students and international students.
MedSoc hosts an exhaustive list of academic and social events for the students every year. These well attended events are vital to the student experience during their careers in university. The most notable event is MedBall, the flagship MedSoc event which is well attended every year. Other notable events are MedShow, MedSki, MedSoc Idol and Academic Symposia.
MedSoc gains its financial support from the MedSoc Bookshop, CASOC, various corporate sponsorship and alumni grants. MedSoc has also amended their constitution on October 2006 to allow pharmaceutical sponsorship for final year educational events only. They have joined a growing trend in the "corporate medical schools" and is progressive with their stance on economics. MedSoc Bookshop has an annual turnover of over $600,000 AUD and supplies books not only to students but to faculty, alumni and various medical staff from around Sydney and New South Wales. It is hoping to expand its business into the internet in late 2006 with the inclusion of delivery to the other Australian medical schools. With a growing endowment, UNSW MedSoc is fast becoming one of the wealthiest Medical Student Societies in Australia.
MedSoc and USyd Med have jointly hosted AMSA Convention 2005: Life on the Red Carpet with record numbers of delegates from all over Australia and New Zealand and North America. It featured academic events with prominent speakers on topics such as endoscopic brain surgery. It also featured unrivaled social events held in various night hotspots in Sydney.
MedSoc produces three publications, the Umbilical, the Idioglossia and MedWhine. The Umbilical is a magazine distributed to all the freshmen students prior to embarking on the journey that is medical school. It contains a book list, as well as articles on how to survive their first year. The Idioglossia is a compliation of articles written by students, faculty and alumni which is produced by the publications office of MedSoc. Articles are intellectually and politically stimulating as well as various humor and comics related paraphanelia, and offers much to the student interest, if nothing more, as toilet reading. Over 1500 copies are distributed half yearly to the members of MedSoc as well as corporate and alumni sponsors. Idioglosia is a tool that allows corporate sponsors to reach medical students and inform them of new products and services they may provide. MedWhine is the monthly newspaper written by the secretary and the assistant secretary to inform members about the ins-and-outs of medsoc politics that are pertinent.
MedSoc works extensively with charities by itself and with its sister organization Medical Student's Aid Project (MSAP). Each year, MedSoc generates tens of thousands of dollars to help various charities such as Sydney Children's Hospital, Fred Hollows Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Australia and the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. MedSoc also helps raise money for MSAP, a UNSW student run charity project that purchases and delivers medical supplies to underprivileged hospitals in developing countries. This ongoing support of charity is driven solely by the internal ethics of the member base. One Shot in 2003 has succeeded in breaking the Guinness Book of World Records in number of shots taken in a row, only to be beaten 3 months later.
MedSoc, though a young society compared to the other Group of Eight (Go8) Medical Societies, still has a strong tradition of camaraderie and support for its students. Though our history is still in its first few chapters, we look forward to what the future has in store for us.
