Unreal Gold is a compilation pack containing Unreal and its expansion pack, Unreal Mission Pack I: Return to Na Pali. Unlike most compilation packs, Unreal Gold is a different version than that of Unreal or its expansion, making both effectively one game, using a menu system similar to that of Unreal Tournament. It is also known amongst the community that Unreal Gold is incompatible online with the latest patch of the original Unreal, forcing most server administrators to go back to a previous patch so that Unreal Gold players can participate online with players of the original Unreal.
Also of note is that the compilation was never released outside of North America, meaning that those outside North America who wish to play it would have to either import it or resort to unauthorized downloads in order to get it.
Unreal Gold has a big advantage to Unreal: it doesn't need Voodoo card (3dfx) to run in hardware mode. Therefore it has smooth textures and runs fast both on Voodoo and non-Voodoo cards. Original game has visible pixels on textures on non-voodoo cards, and runs slower on them.
Unreal Gold was also included in the recent Unreal Anthology compilation, though the version included has some differences from previous versions of Unreal Gold. It is also incompatible online with all other Unreal players and servers except those who also have the Unreal Anthology version. But a patch has been released by fans that addresses the online issues with the anthology version of Unreal Gold.[1]
