Unreal Anthology is a compilation pack containing Unreal Gold (which includes Unreal and its expansion pack), Unreal Tournament, Unreal II: The Awakening, and Unreal Tournament 2004. The package includes pre-patched and up-to-date versions for most of the included games. The anthology was partially intended as a way for Epic to remarket the games under their new publisher for the series, Midway Games, after leaving Atari shortly after Unreal Tournament 3's announcement. The package originally released at a price of USD 30.
Initial reactions to the announcement of the package were good partially due to its format:[citation needed] instead of having multiple discs for each game (which would total over 10 CD-ROMs for all original releases), all four games are packaged on a single dual-layer DVD-ROM with a unified installer and pre-patched games. The addition of the bonus music CD, containing an array of music from the various titles, was also considered a positive.
However, upon the release of the anthology, some reactions dimmed.[citation needed] The original Unreal is not compatible with any other Unreal servers. [1] The package lacks the fan made "Bonus Pack 4" content for the original Unreal Tournament[2]. Also missing from Unreal Tournament are the improved S3TC textures which came with the original CD releases of the game; however, incomplete official display drivers or more fully developed third-party drivers are required for their operation, which are unofficial and thus not supported. The package also lacks the eXpanded MultiPlayer addon to Unreal II, which was released as part of a Special Edition package of Unreal II as well as a free download to owners. Although this content is still compatible with the Anthology release, it must be downloaded as it was developed by Legend Entertainment and Midway could not legally distribute it. Unreal Tournament 2004 is unusually missing two maps from the Editor's Choice Edition of the game, ONS-Aridoom and ONS-Ascendancy [3]. A minority of players were turned off by the lack of Linux support by the anthology. The executables to run on Linux is not offered as a free download.
