UnleashX
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UnleashX is a dashboard (or boot up screen on the Xbox system) used to run/select programs on modified Xbox game systems. It is basically an alternative to the original Microsoft Dashboard.
Arriving late to the Xbox modification scene, UnleashX has proven itself to be one of the most flexible and user friendly dashboards available. It is known for its extensive skinning capabilities, extra options, and functionality not found in most dashboards, including a text editor, screensaver, ftp client (and server, though this is a feature of all XBOX dashboards), skin and gamesave browser/downloader, skin colour scheme and format menu. It is also one of the few Xbox dashboards that support game/application preview videos and preview images.
UnleashX is one of the most active dashboards in the modification scene, with regular updates available through live update if connected to the internet. With its extensive feature list UnleashX has gained a lot of converts from traditional dashboards such as EvolutionX.
To be used, like any XBOX software, it must be compiled with the Microsoft XDK . This is illegal, as this software is being used without Microsoft's authorization. For this reason it cannot be downloaded from its official website but can still usually be found in many irc channels or ftp servers where many other XDK built xbox homebrew applications, games and dashboards are distributed.
UnleashX is now rapidly becoming a gamers choice of dashboard because of its many features which extend and unveil the possibilities what can be modified or customized according to personal taste. The capability to skin an xbox dashboard is getting increasingly popular.
The UnleashX dashboard is only intended for modified xbox consoles. Any modification, including software mods that can be installed without opening the console, will void your warranty. It is also possible that it can completely break your console, although this is very unlikely if you are careful and follow all instructions.
[edit] Types of Modifications
Here is a brief overview of various console modification methods which allow the xbox to run unofficial applications. (For an application to run on an unmodified XBOX, it must be digitally signed by Microsoft. A modded XBOX does not check for a digital signature and will run any application.)
- Modchip: internal chip placed inside of the xbox.
- Softmod: Loophole in xbox software security. Most popular softmods, such as UXE or NDURE, are installed through a modified gamesave. Softmods have become very stable and safe with recent advancements.
- TSOP flash: TSOP is a technical term meaning 'Thin Small Outline Package', which describes the microchip packaging. The earlier revisions of an XBOX contained rewritable Flash memory which used the TSOP style of microchip packaging. TSOP flashing in the context of an XBOX requires updating of the software on this microchip by jumping traces (small wires) on the motherboard to make the chip writable from software. A software exploit (usually in the form of a modified save game) is used to flash (replace the software of) the chips with unofficial software.
