University of the Azores

Universidade dos Açores is a public university and the westernmost university in Portugal. It is the Azores' only university and was founded in 1976, just after the April Revolution in 1974.

The University opened on 9th January, 1976 in the aftermath of the Portuguese Revolution of 1974 and before the institutionalization of the Autonomous Region.

The university is in Ponta Delgada and has two campuses:

The head of the university is Prof. Doutor Avelino de Freitas de Meneses, a specialist in the insular history of the Atlantic. Other facilities includes the Departamento de Biologia, the Department of Biology

The university buildings are in three parishes including one in Ponta Delgada and one in São Pedro northeast of Ponta Delgada. The university has a university team.
