[edit] History

The University of West Alabama was chartered in 1835 as Livingston Female Academy and State Normal College, a church-related female academy, and admitted its first students in 1839. After difficult times during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, the school reopened in the late 1860s or early 1870s. Although it appears that a few male students were admitted following the reopening, a resolution by the Board of Trustees in 1876 excluded boys, and this policy was followed until the beginning of the 20th century.

Livingston Female Academy and State Normal College continued as a women's college with some State support until 1907, when the State assumed full control. It remained under its own board of trustees, however, until the Alabama Legislature created a State Board of Trustees for all the normal schools in 1911. In 1919 this board was abolished and all state normal schools were placed under the supervision of the State Board of Education. During these early years the school offered both secondary education and normal school programs for the training of teachers.

In 1929 the school at Livingston became State Teachers College, Livingston, Alabama, with authority to confer the degree of Bachelor of Science. The Bachelor of Arts degree was authorized in 1947. Although the institution had begun accepting male students soon after 1900, the student body remained predominantly female through the 1950s.

In 1957 the name was again changed by an act of Legislature — this time to Livingston State College — and the following year the mission of the institution was broadened when the Graduate Division was established and the College was authorized to confer master’s degrees in the field of professional education. In 1967 an act of the Legislature created Livingston University, with its own Board of Trustees.

In 1995 the institution recognized its broader mission as a regional university serving the educational needs of all the citizens of the area by changing its name to The University of West Alabama.

The Alma Mater
All hail to thee, our Alma Mater!
Sings our loyalty.
O' may you keep us thine forever,
Minds and spirits free.
We stand beside thee strong and brave,
Our gladsome voice sing.
When youth's bright morning fades away,
Thy praise shall every ring!

The Fight Song
We will fight, fight, fight
for the Red and White
for the Glory of UWA.*
We will lend our might
for the Red and White
for a cause we know is true.
We will fight for victory,
We will fight on endlessly,
We will ever stand, Every heart, Every hand,
For the glory of UWA.

Note 1: The "GSC" column displays only conference games which count in the official standings. It does not include GSC opponents played in non-conference games.

Note 2: The "Next Contest" column displays a date and opponent for the next game UWA will play. The "vs." signifies a home or tournament (neutral) contest while "at" signifies a road contest. Each date is subject to change; italicized dates are exhibition contests. A conference game is signified by (GSC Game) or (GSC Match) following the opponent. If a game is against a GSC opponent played as a non-conference game, it is not noted.

Note 3: The University of West Alabama football team finished with a winning record for the first time since 1992. This is the school's first official winning season as "UWA" due to the name being "Livingston University, or LU" at the time. The six wins is also the most in a season since 1991 when the team recorded six wins that year.

Note 4: The University of West Alabama women's basketball team recorded their 13th win of the season at Montevallo on January 27 equaling the team's total from all of 2005-2006 when they finished 13 - 16. The win was also the 200th career victory for Head Coach Amanda Marks. Four days later, on January 31, the team defeated Concordia College surpassing their win total from the 2005-2006 season. Amanda Marks reached another milestone when she recorded her 100th career victory at UWA with the team's win over West Florida on February 19.

Note 5: The University of West Alabama softball team recorded their 14th and 15th wins of the season on March 8 when they hosted Miles College. This surpasses their win total from all of the 2006 season when they finished with 14 wins. The softball team won their 20th game of the season on March 22 at Judson College. This is the first time since 2001 that the team has recorded 20 or more wins.

The University of West Alabama Housing Office's mission is to provide an environment conducive to personal growth and academic success. This mission is accomplished by:

  • Providing reasonably priced residence halls and apartments which are clean, well maintained, safe, and comfortable.
  • Coordinating programs to assist students in their personal growth and development outside of the classroom.
  • Assisting new students in their adjustment to college.
  • Creating an environment in the residence halls that is conducive to learning.
  • Involving students within the residence halls so that they develop a sense of community and tolerance for others.

The University of West Alabama has six residence halls and an apartment complex for graduate and married students, all of which are conveniently located near classes and campus services.

Most of the students live in traditional residence halls, though students who attend the University on a Trustee Scholarship may also choose to live in one of the Residential Scholar Communities. The traditional residence halls are Spieth Hall, Selden Hall and Sisk Hall.

The three buildings that make up the Residential Scholar Communities are Reed Hall, Stickney Hall and Hoover Apartments. First-year freshmen on a Trustee Scholarship are given priority to stay in Reed Hall. Patterson Apartments are for graduate students or those who are married, have children or are over 24 years of age.

Each residence hall consists of a Hall Director, Resident Assistants (RA's), and several residents. Desk Assistants (DA's) also work in the residence halls; however, beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year, they will only be limited to Stickney Hall. Reed Hall, Stickney Hall, Hoover Apartments, and Spieth Hall are co-ed residence halls, while Selden Hall is for women, and Sisk Hall is for men. For the 2007-2008 academic year, Reed Hall, Stickney Hall, Hoover Apartments, and Sisk Hall will be co-ed residence halls. Spieth Hall will be for men, and Selden Hall will be for women.

Spieth Hall, formerly a co-ed residence hall in the past, has been converted back to this arrangement for the 2006-2007 academic year. Also, Sisk Hall, formerly just for football players, will now be an all male residence hall that is not limited to football players. Other males may live in Sisk if space is available. Beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year, Spieth Hall will convert back to an all-male residence hall, while Sisk Hall will become co-ed.

The following residence hall rates are listed to provide an estimate of a student's room and board expenses for each semester. These rates are for the 2006-2007 academic year. Most students attend the University two semesters each year during the fall and spring. All room and board rates are subject to change. The rates listed below are per person, based on double occupancy. When available, a private room costs an additional 50%. Private rooms are not usually available during the fall semester.

If students live in a residence hall, they are also required to purchase a meal plan. Hoover and Patterson Apartments are exceptions to this. The meal plan rates listed below refer to the minimum meal plan required of the particular residence hall and how many meals are provided each week.

2006-2007 Residence Hall Rates

  • Reed Hall (Room Rate $990; 9 Meal Plan $695 – $1,685 Total)
  • Stickney Hall (Room Rate $1,020; 9 Meal Plan $695 – $1,715 Total)
  • Hoover Apartments (Room Rate $1,150; Meal Plan Not Required – $1,150 Total)
  • Spieth Hall (Room Rate $760; 14 Meal Plan $838 – $1,598 Total)
  • Selden Hall (Room Rate $760; 14 Meal Plan $838 – $1,598 Total)
