[edit] Departments

The faculty presently houses three academic departments. They are Health Studies and Gerontology, Kinesiology, and Recreation and Leisure Studies.

[edit] Kinesiology

Beginnings

The department of Kinesiology was founded as the department of Physical Education. Their original home was the Physical Activities Complex before moving to Burt Mathews Hall in the mid 1980's. The department moved away from the Physical education side and incorporated a more scientific approach to human movement and activity. The University of Waterloo was the first university in the world to have a department of Kinesiology.

Kinesiology Today

The department has continued to develop over the past two decades. It is one of the best kinesiology programs in Canada.[citation needed] Undergraduates have the opportunity to remain in a general program or pursue concentrations in Neurobehavioural Assessment, Ergonomics or Pre-Health. There are also several other streams an undergraduate can follow: physiology, biomechanics and sports medicine.
