The University of Texas at Tyler, also referred to as UT Tyler, is a public university located in Tyler, Texas, USA. It has a student body of over 5,900, a 17:1 student to faculty ratio, and a sprawling, park-like campus. UT Tyler is part of the University of Texas System.

The University of Texas at Tyler was originally founded in 1971 as Tyler State College. It was renamed Texas Eastern College in 1975, and then joined the University of Texas System in 1979. UT Tyler was initially an upper level university, teaching only upper division undergraduate and graduate level classes. In 1997, with the addition of lower division classes, UT Tyler became a full four-year university. It is the only UT System campus serving the East Texas region.]].[1]

UT Tyler’s main campus consists of about 200 acres nestled into the pine and oak forests of Tyler, Texas located in East Texas. The university has satellite campuses in nearby cities of Longview, Texas and Palestine, Texas.

The Herrington Patriot Center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio-theater and circuit training, racquetball court, indoor walking/jogging track and gymnasium/convocation area with basketball/volleyball court and seating for 2,000. Heated pool and spa.

UT Tyler’s R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center attracts a wide array of cultural entertainment, and 26,000 patrons attend the performances annually.

UT Tyler offers over 80 student organizations including Greek fraternities and sororities.

The City of Tyler has a population of over 100,000, and is only an afternoon drive from three of the country’s largest cities: Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Tyler has a variety of museums, recreational opportunities and the nationally recognized Caldwell Zoo and East Texas Symphony.

The city has 250 restaurants, 22 area sporting lakes, 26 parks, five hospitals, 2,200 hotel rooms and a mall with more than 80 clothing, service and specialty stores and kiosks.[citation needed]

Nearby attractions include Tyler State Park, Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge, Tyler Market Center, Canton Trade Days, Blues Festival, Fire Mountain Amusement Park, Discovery Science Place, Festival on the Square, Ballet Tyler, Tyler Museum of Art, Texas State Railroad and much more.

One of the most prominent features of the UT Tyler campus is Riter Tower, an 88 foot carillon featuring 58 bells. The tower was built with a $1.35 million dollar gift from Mr. and Mrs. A.W. "Dub" Riter Jr. It is the largest carillon in Texas, and the 15th largest in the United States.
